Out and About: Simply Cupcakes

There’s little more satisfying, or lovelier to eat, than a freshly baked cupcake. When a cupcake is local, though, it tends to taste even sweeter. Simply Cupcakes of Traverse City has been providing the most beautiful and delectable cupcakes made from scratch since its opening about one and a half years ago. Its signature ‘not too sweet’ Italian butter cream frosting has been paving the way for their ever-present bright pink boxes that travel with their owners around Downtown TC.

Simply Cupcakes isn’t only a place to pop in to for a quick order, however. They also offer custom cakes for parties, meetings, birthdays and weddings. Customers can choose from a vast variety of cupcakes, regular cakes and, most recently added, macaroons! The appropriately sweet Heidi informed me that Len, the bakery’s owner and baker, recently traveled to New York to study the art of baking macaroons from French bakers. My indulgence in my Red Velvet macaroon has left me awe-struck.

Whether you appreciate a simple cupcake or love a more elaborate taste, Simply Cupcakes offers about 40 flavors—anything from the Bumpy: dark chocolate cake stuffed with white chocolate ganache, fluffy butter cream frosting and chocolate shavings; to the Silly Wabbit: carrot cake made with ground walnuts, chocolate ganache and white Italian butter cream. Not every flavor is available every day, however; they only offer their vegan cupcakes once a week and they get snapped up quickly. They also experiment with flavors to fit anyone’s theme. Last year they celebrated the Traverse City Film Festival by offering a vanilla cake topped with popcorn and caramel that was only available during the week of the festival. If only there were room enough to try them all!

If you are interested in having Simply Cupcakes cater your wedding, rehearsal, shower, or any event for that matter, head over to their contact page and do it in a hurry! They’re already booking up for the summer, and you do not want to miss out.

Visit Simply Cupcakes to take a bite out of local flavor and I promise you’ll be going back for more.

Out & About: Potter's Bakery

It is my belief that the best way to enjoy a doughnut…is any way. But to be fair, the fresher the doughnut, the happier the tummy! I took a trip on over the Potter's Bakery early this morning to appreciate, through my taste buds, the early mornings that the lovely ladies and gents go through every day to bring Traverse City the best doughnuts, pastries, cookies and cakes!

Besides being a favorite among locals, Potters Bakery has been locally owned and operated for over 80 years, and always have a trained, experienced and kind staff on hand to help with any of your sweets needs. Although their location has moved a couple of times, and grown by another, the Potters Bakery on the corner of Rose and Eighth St. has stood strong for 64 years, and has continued to be owned and operated by the Potter family.

No matter their location, they always seem to be busy, so get your parking spot while you can! You may also want to call ahead if you’re concerned about Potters having a specific kind of pastry, or to make sure their cake decorator will be there to discuss design and pricing of your wedding cake. Each wedding cake is specially designed to the needs of the couple with colors, textures, decorations and frostings, so it’s important to be able to speak with the right person.

The pricing is right, their technique is superb, and their flavors are to die for. To see exactly how talented their team is, and perhaps for some inspiration, take a look at their online gallery. From simple to extravagant, Potters seems to be doing it all right, especially in the eyes of The Knot, who named Potters one of the ‘Best Of’ in wedding cakes for 2010. Give Potters a call to get started on making your wedding reception he sweetest it can be.
