Hi, I'm Rebecca, the photographer behind Rockhill Studio!
How did you get into the wedding industry?
Ever since I had gotten my first "real" camera (it was film, actually!) I loved everything about photography. I was shooting more as a passionate hobby when I started second shooting with a wedding photographer. I got to see weddings from all shapes and sizes and budgets and documenting a couples' most important day of their life totally got me hooked! Photographing weddings and working with my couples is for sure my happy place!
How would you describe your style?
I love to tell the story of a couple's wedding day. Even if it's a shorter wedding and we are there for only a portion of it, I love for my photography to reflect a more journalistic, lifestyle approach, to capture the events as how they happen. Carefully curated events at times, working a couple into a pose or creating a situation, but letting them be themselves in it. I love capturing genuine laughter, authentic smiles, real emotion!
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
From a photography standpoint, for sure the few moments I get to sneak a bride and groom out for some last images at sunset!! From a non-photography standpoint, I love the toasts! I love hearing the crazy stories from the best man, or the touching words from the maid of honor that almost always makes the whole room cry. I know my couples I work with are amazing, but its really special hearing it from the wedding guests.
What are some of your favorite trends from last wedding season?
Naked cakes, succulents in the wedding bouquet, and flower crowns. Even if these go out of style, I'll still love them!!
What advice do you have for couples about choosing a photographer?
I can't stress enough to make sure this is one area that a couple should not skimp on!! Having a photographer who specializes in weddings can take a ton of stress away from you, especially if things go a little out of schedule on the wedding day! A wedding photographer is comfortable shooting in dimly lit churches, will create beautiful lighting at your reception, and be cool with whatever shooting challenges arise...including an arsenal of backup equipment to make sure no matter what, your wedding day is captured. There're so many styles of photography out there, find one that really connects with you. A good wedding photographer is 100% absolutely worth every penny!
How far in advance should a couple look into booking your services?
12-18 months. We book up super early, especially for the most popular months of the wedding season, so once you get that ring on your finger, call your family to tell them, and then your next call should be us!
What advice do you have for couples about the planning process?
For your vendors, book them early. And be flexible! If a favorite vendor or venue is booked, try a weekday or a Sunday (I love middle of the week weddings)! And don't be scared to be creative. Some of my favorite weddings have been from unexpected venues, or something non-traditional that the couple makes totally their own.
What do you love about living and working in Northern Michigan?
I've lived and shot in so many amazing areas of the country and I love this area so much because no where else can you have the beauty like you have here. Within a relatively close distance you have everything from orchards and vineyards, to forests, to huge sand cliffs, to many pretty lakes and adorable downtown cities. There's so much variety and I know I can capture exactly what my clients have envisioned! And having been born and raised here in Michigan, I'm just so thrilled to be able to do what I love in the place that I call home!!
