I'm Kalin Sheick, the owner and lead designer at Stems & Sprigs. We specialize in full service floral design for weddings and events, with a focus on events that are inspired by Northern Michigan. My husband and I live in Petoskey where we are currently working on restoring and updating our old farm. My favorite things on the planet are (in no particular order): flowers, coffee, dinner parties, camping, Northern Michigan, my dog, & lavender.
How did you get into the wedding industry?
I always found myself helping with florals for events hosted by friends & family. I started by just filling private orders for clients - personal arrangements. When the opportunity to book a wedding presented itself we jumped and have never looked back!
How would you describe your style?
Garden fresh, gathered, rustic, organic, & whimsical.
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
As a florist, its handing the bride her bouquet. I almost always have a tear in my eye. But as a guest, the vows. It is such an incredibly special moment, you can feel it in the air!
What are some of your favorite trends from last wedding season?
Man oh man, I love this entire movement that is happening up here with supporting local artists, creators, artisans, and makers. Having brides who love knowing that their flowers were grown in Northern Michigan, and requesting a design that has movement and organic flow.
What advice do you have for couples about choosing a floral designer?
Pick a floral designer you vibe with. Someone who you trust. Their creativity should be something that excites you!
How far in advance should a couple look into booking your services?
We are nearly full for 2016 and already have a few 2017 dates. We are selective in the events that we take on, so it's always good to check because we may have your day open!
What advice do you have for couples about the planning process?
Remember that it's your day. Remember why you got to this point, and have FUN on your wedding.
What do you love about living and working in Northern Michigan?
I'll try and avoid making this response a novel :) I am a firm believer there is no better part of the country to live in, love in, and make a living in. The people of Northern Michigan are the nicest you'll find anywhere and the spirit of community is incredible. Our four distinct and different seasons cannot be beat, each one offers amazing recreation, and the natural beauty of our lakeshore is the best in the world!
