Hi, I’m Tracy Grant and KarunaPhoto is the name of my photography business. I have been a full time photographer and entrepreneur for eight years now. Northern Michigan has been my home for sixteen years...that almost makes me a local.
A lot of people wonder about the name. Karuna means ‘compassionate action’ in the Sanskrit language. I chose it because it’s a wonderful practice to be reminded of when doing business or in any area of my life. Community, friends, relationships, finding myself with you.
How did you get into the wedding industry?
I was hired as a wedding photo assistant while I pursued photography in college. I was fortunate to attend many diverse celebrations and experienced every level of human emotion imaginable! When I started KarunaPhoto in 2008 I knew I would want to be a part of this community’s wedding industry.
How would you describe your style?
My style is fun, relaxed, and creative. I do minimal posing and I really like to get to know a couple, so the real laughs, and tender moments shine through.
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
My favorite part of a wedding is different with each couple. It could be their first kiss, first beam of love from down the aisle, maybe an emotional or silly moment with family and friends. Each wedding is special and different.
What are some of your favorite trends from last wedding season?
I loved that couples really put personal touches into everything. This is a day to celebrate two unique people who are going to share life. If one loves geology and the other loves the stars, then incorporate that in details or even let it inform the venue choice.
What advice do you have for couples about choosing a photographer?
You want a photographer’s creative style to match your own. Love the photographer's work and look to see if they have similar interests and values.
How far in advance should a couple look into booking your services?
Most couples contact me a year in advance, but I have photographed intimate, last minute weddings too. I’m prepared for either, but to lock in your date and have time to get to know me, I suggest contacting me at least six months ahead.
What advice do you have for couples about the planning process?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are able to hire a wedding planner then you are all set but if not, reach out to your vendors, family, and this amazing site, Simply Blue, for answers and guidance.
What do you love about living and working in Northern Michigan?
Really everything! Even winter. Feeling introverted? Go to the beaches, woods, or farm land and have a quiet moment. Need advice or support with your work? No problem. Most everyone like to help each other out. Here you can experience world class entertainment, food, and art, all the while being surrounded by stunning, natural beauty and welcoming communities.
