My name is Dan Stewart. I had the privilege to grow up surrounded by the natural beauty of Northern Michigan and the kind, welcoming people who call this place home. I am a husband, a father, an explorer, a storyteller and a follower of Jesus Christ.
Dan Stewart Photography is a place where intricate storytelling takes visual form. Engagements, weddings, maternity, family, graduations- whichever of life’s chapters you find yourself in, Dan Stewart Photography seeks to capture, document, and help share that story.
How did you get into the wedding industry?
I didn’t always plan on being in the wedding industry, but when I was graduating college, I had to choose between photojournalism and wedding photography. Since the journalism industry was going down hill, it made more sense start my own business and pursue wedding photography. At the time, my brother and now brother in law were getting married and that offered a great opportunity to see what it would be like to photograph weddings. I offered them my services and boom, my wedding photography career began.
How would you describe your style?
To put it simple: I am a storyteller. My goal is to foster an environment where clients feel comfortable enough to truly open up and be exactly who they are. My work is driven by emotions; I am most inspired by laughter, tears, love, family, and friends.
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
As a devoted follower of Christ and as a husband, I love the sanctity of what marriage is. I love listening to the vows, and being able to document the God given gift of marriage.
And as a wedding photographer, I love those quiet, intimate moments shared between the bride and groom. On a day of celebration, timelines, and detail, it is truly those special, time-stopping moments that remind us of what this is all about. It’s about love and commitment; it’s about two special individuals. And witnessing and documenting those moments is truly a privilege.
What are some of your current favorite wedding trends?
I can’t say that I have a favorite wedding trend but I will say that I enjoy when couples focus more on how they are going to make their wedding rememberable then accomplishing their Pinterest board.
What advice do you have for couples about choosing a photographer?
First, look at their work. Scroll through their blog. Does their style match up with yours?
And then get to know the photographer. Talk with them; meet with them. Apart from your bridal party, your wedding photographer is the person that you will most amount of time with on your wedding day. It’s important that you feel comfortable around the person that you are inviting into your big day.
How far in advance should a couple look into booking your services?
Northern Michigan is beautiful. It is a special place for many families who often visit its sandy shores and quaint lakeside towns on summer getaways. So it’s no surprise that it is also a popular wedding destination.
That being said, it is always a good idea to inquire with wedding venders early. We are often booking weddings a year or more in advance.
What advice do you have for couples about the planning process?
Enjoy it. This is a special and exciting time in your life that will go by quickly. So savor the moments.
Ask questions. Your wedding photographer has been to a LOT of weddings and would love to help you ensure that your wedding day flows as smoothly as possible and is a day that you will always remember and cherish.
What do you love about living and working in Northern Michigan?
What don’t I love?! Northern Michigan is a very special place. With vineyards and orchards, rolling countryside, crystal blue waters, miles of sand dunes, and innumerable quaint towns, the beauty and esthetic appeal of Northern Michigan is—quite frankly—unrivaled. For some, Northern Michigan is home; to others, it is an escape. Yet, regardless of which category you may fall into, it is a beautiful place where lasting memories are made.
