I am Carrie House, owner and photographer of Carrie House photography. I specialize in weddings and portraiture photography. My photography journey started like many others, with a small DSLR to take pictures of my children. I instantly fell in love with capturing the emotions, smiles, and laughter and knew I wanted to take this journey one step further. I am also a math teacher at our local high school, and starting a photography business to keep me busy in the summer was a perfect fit. When people find out that I am a math teacher they are quite surprised that a logical mathematician has a creative side, but I think it helps balance my work and creativity into a nice cohesive blend. I reside in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan but travel all over the state, especially Northern Michigan. I have two small boys that keep me busy and who inspire everything I do and a wonderful husband of almost 7 years who has been so very supportive of my journey and passion for wedding photography.
How did you get into the wedding industry?
I got in to the wedding photography when a girl I went to college with asked me to do her wedding. She trusted me enough to give me my first step in the door and I cannot be thankful enough that she did.
How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as elegant and timeless. I am inspired by beauty and classic look of film and strive to create images that will be beautiful years from now. I love capturing the natural flow of a bride and groom and strive to keep my images clean and timeless.
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
I love everything about weddings, but I would have to say my favorite part is when I first arrive at a wedding. Seeing the bride getting hair and makeup done, feeling the excitement in the air, and starting to capture details that each bride has carefully picked out and planned is so much fun. Every bride has a unique style and vision for their day, and it is in this time when I first arrive that I can see their vision come to life and capture their wedding day style. It is truly fun to unzip the bag and see the wedding dress for the first time, to photograph the shoes, and to hear stories about sentimental jewelry or pieces from relatives. This time with the bride sets the tone for the rest of the day and I look forward to it with every wedding.
What are some of your favorite trends from this wedding season?
Some of my favorite trends from this wedding season are unique venues, floral bridesmaid dresses, and lush green flowers. More brides are using eucalyptus and succulents in bouquets and they are beautifully stunning and elegant.
What advice do you have for couples about choosing a photographer?
When choosing a photographer, it is important that you love his or her style, but more importantly that you love his or her personality. Your photographer will be with you your entire day and spending a lot of time with you. Requesting an in person meeting before booking someone will help ensure that you feel comfortable with your choice. Being a photographer to me is about much more than capturing beautiful images, it is about giving my clients an experience and helping facilitate their wedding day in any way possible. I am here to serve you in any capacity I can while providing you with an amazing experience.
How far in advance should a couple look into booking your services?
My services are booked a year or two in advance. I take 15-17 weddings a year and my schedule fills up fast. Booking your photographer as soon as you have a date (venue or no venue) is extremely important, especially if you are getting married in a prime wedding month like June or September.
What advice do you have for couples about the planning process?
My advice for the planning process is to remember that the entire wedding process is about the two of you committing your lives to each other and celebrating love. It is easy to get swept away in the small details and lose sight of what is truly important, marrying your best friend. Years from now you will have your pictures to look back on and hopefully they invoke the emotions that you felt, the joy, the excitement, laughter, and love felt on that day. Your wedding will be perfect for you and your style, so do not let Pinterest or other weddings define your wedding style. Relax and enjoy your day, because it will be over before you know it!
What do you love about living and working in Northern Michigan?
Northern Michigan has a special place in my heart. My fondest memories of summer vacation with my family were spent on a lake in Northern Michigan during the 4th of July. It is here that friendships were forged, memories were made, Euchre was learned, and my love for this area bloomed. I love living in Northern Michigan and traveling to different venues for weddings and seeing all of the amazing landscapes, tight knit communities, and the possibilities. Northern Michigan is becoming a destination for many people, and I want to help it become a destination for weddings as well.
