Kim and Paul's wedding was a weekend of fun and games and joyous celebration on historic Mackinac Island. They even sent their bridal party on a tandem bike scavenger hunt around the island, ending at the rehearsal dinner! We are so glad bride Kim shared her beautiful day with us!
From bride Kim: I am so excited to share our beautiful Mackinac Island, Michigan wedding with Simply Blue Weddings! My husband Paul (ah! still so fun to say!) and I met seven years ago through a mutual friend. The first three years of our relationship were long-distance. He was at law school in Michigan, and I was finishing up my undergrad in Arizona. After our graduations, we moved to Chicago together. In December of 2013, we went on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Australia! On our first day there, we took a trip deep into the rain forest in the tropical North Queensland city of Cairns. As we approached a beautiful waterfall, he proposed!!
When we got back to the states, we immediately booked our wedding venue - Mission Point Resort, on Mackinac Island in Northern Michigan. Paul grew up spending summers on the island with his family - they participated in the Chicago to Mackinac boat races for over 20 years. The island was a special place to us both and we knew it was the perfect spot for our wedding.
We hired our photographer to join us at our rehearsal and rehearsal dinner as well. In between the rehearsal and dinner, we challenged our bridal party to a “bike road rally” scavenger hunt. They were given clues to lead them to our favorite spots on the island. Once they found the next spot, a family member would hand them the next clue. They were required to ride tandem bike with the person they would walk down the aisle with (maid of honor & best man, etc.). This was a really fun way for them to get to know each other and to discover the island and the places we love so much. We wrote all of the clues ourselves and were so excited with how it turned out. The challenge ended at an old time photo spot, where we all took a, you guessed it, old time photo together. The rehearsal dinner was held right next door on the back patio of the Pink Pony, so we were all able to walk over together.
The island itself was our inspiration for a lot of the details of our wedding. There are no cars on the island, and haven't been since the late 1890's - just horses and bikes! The island has a very charming and vintage feel - which we used to our advantage. We wanted to convey a romantic, charming, chic feeling. We used the horse and bike motif throughout our wedding. Our welcome totes had tandem bikes and our cake topper was a tandem bike. For our wedding favors we handed out personalized boxes of fudge - an island favorite!! We also used horse heads for our grand entrance and some fun photos! My flowers were a mix of soft pinks and creamy neutrals - peonies, ranunculus, and hydrangeas. My dress was a champagne, lace, & beaded mermaid gown - beautiful and unique!
