On a rainy, chilly, May day in Leland, Julia and Chris tied the knot. The joy and love they showed for each other and their guests was contagious and brightened the cloudy day for everyone in attendance. Plus, as this collection proves, rainy day photos are the best!
Without much hesitation, Chris and I knew we wanted to have our wedding in Leland. We briefly discussed other locations, but inevitably we couldn’t imagine our day anywhere else but in northern Michigan. Much of the inspiration for our big day came directly from the area, from our color palette of neutrals and spring greens and blues, to the details of the meal at our reception.
For our wedding weekend, we wanted more than anything for our guests to be able to relax and enjoy the area that is so special to us. For that reason, we kept all the events in downtown Leland rather than seeking out venues in other parts of the Leelanau peninsula.
For our wedding day, we wanted a day that was easy and "no fuss," but still beautiful and genuine to our personalities. Our goal was for our reception to feel like a great backyard dinner party, just with a lot more people, and a killer band.
Northern Michigan weather in late spring has a personality all its own. We chose May 30 because we thought we would have a better chance for sun and a comfortable temperature. Needless to say, the weather did not behave as we had hoped. All week it had been 65 and partly cloudy, and just delightful. I woke up on our wedding day and it was pouring rain and 45 degrees. But when it’s your wedding day, you just don’t care what the weather is. The rain made for this beautiful, moody feeling, and it was so special to see the way our vendors and family pulled together our “plan b.” Our photographers, day of coordinators, and caterer made things work despite the cooler temps and muddy lawn.
We have so many favorite moments from the day, its hard to pick (from the funny moments putting on my very fitted dress to shaking it on stage with our band to close out our reception). The happiest moment of our day (and probably my life) was the beautiful ceremony we had. I remember walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing 160+ people there smiling at us. At the end of the aisle was Chris, calmly smiling and waiting for me. In that moment he looked so sure, happy, and calm. In the end, we realized that it helps to have amazing coordinators, vendors, and a kick-ass band, but its the people and the love you get to celebrate that makes for an amazing wedding day.
Best pre-bridal advice I received: “If the bride and groom are smiling like crazy, are relaxed and are having fun, everyone else will have an amazing time too."
