Four time CrossFit Games competitor Julie Foucher married Dani Urcuyo on a beautiful, sunny day in Gaylord, Michigan. The ceremony took place at St. Mary’s Cathedral in downtown Gaylord before moving to nearby Sojourn Lakeside Resort for dinner and dancing. The whole day was bright, joyful, and energetic, filled with laughter, fun, and group workouts. Throughout it all, Julie was calm, more calm than I have ever seen a bride on her big day. Last week I had the chance to chat with Julie about her secrets to staying healthy and relaxed in the midst of all the nerves and adrenaline.
Did you do any specific diet or exercise to prepare for your wedding day?
Not really. I had been planning to be at the CrossFit Games right before the wedding, until my injury. I was doing a lot of rehab and working out less than usual, only five days a week. The exercise helped a lot, though - I felt so much calmer. Exercise has always been a huge stress relief for me. I really wanted to workout the week leading up to the wedding and the morning of, just to feel better going into the day.
What was your wedding morning routine?
I did one of my usual high intensity workouts and then ended it with 15 minutes of yoga. I was at my parents house and being up north, outside, in this beautiful, calming area helped me relax.
On Saturday morning, Julie and Dani scheduled group workouts at Sojourn. Why did you guys decide to host workouts for your guests on your wedding morning?
Just in general working out is something really important to Dani and I. We’ve met a lot of our closest friends through CrossFit and working out. I know when I travel, I’m always stressed about where I’m going to workout and I know a lot of my friends are the same. We wanted to alleviate that stress and use the beautiful lawn and lake at Sojourn to have some cool group activities. We thought it’d allow people to meet each other and enjoy the space.
How did you feel throughout the day?
I was a little nervous but only when we started to drive to the church. I knew everything was prepared and taken care of exactly how I wanted it to be so I could take my time and enjoy being around my family. Everyone says your wedding day flies by so I tried to slow down and enjoy every minute of it.
What are some important things for brides to remember going into their wedding day?
Enjoy it and have fun. Don’t worry about the details. No one else is going to notice if something isn’t exactly the way you planned it. All I cared about was having fun and making sure all of my guests had fun too.
What advice do you have for brides about staying healthy and relaxed on their wedding day?
Do whatever it is that makes you feel relaxed and at your best. For me that was the morning workout and yoga. Surround yourself with people that you love and who are going to bring positive energy.
It also helped that we had a whole wedding weekend - the Friday welcome BBQ, Saturday wedding, and then Sunday brunch. I didn’t feel stressed or pressured to talk to everyone at the reception because I had the whole weekend to catch up with them. We also did a receiving line, which was a good way to make sure we’d greeted all the guests. By the time we got to dinner, we’d talked to everyone at least once and we could just sit back and have fun.
What are some of your favorite wedding memories?
Walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Dani. The speeches from our wedding party. Seeing everyone talking and having fun together. Everyone dancing with the maracas. There are so many good memories, it’s hard to chose favorites!
Look for a full post on Julie & Dani’s wedding coming to the blog sometime in the next few months!
