When I began the wedding planning process, the thought of using Pinterest was completely overwhelming and I was tempted to stay clear of using it. It was all too easy to get lost in the bottomless pit of gorgeous photos, pinning frantically inspiration after inspiration, that before you know it you've spent an entire day on the internet. After experiencing a few of those run ins with Pinterest, I slowly did begin to see my vision come to life. I was able to recognize patterns in the photos I was pinning, which to me was a sign that "this is what you're going for!", "you like how this looks!" I liked the direction my boards were going, so I continued to use Pinterest to help me plan. Here are a few reasons why I've found it to be so helpful:
Generates your theme
During the planning process, I've consistently received the question of "What's your theme?" After multiple blank stares and "I don't know" reactions, my Pinterest boards have helped me realize what my theme is. After a while my boards began to fill with photos that contained similar styles, colors, patterns, elements, and textures. This gave me a direction to follow when answering the "What's your theme?" question and making actual selections for my wedding. For me personally, it took a bit of time for my themes to pop out at me. Practice patience with yourself and trust that your vision is there hidden among all your photos. Deleting pins also really helped my vision become more clear because the remaining ones were the ones I loved most.
Keeps you organized
Despite feeling very overwhelmed with Pinterest at first, I was able to become more organized as I went along with it. What has worked best for me was creating multiple boards so that you can compartmentalize your visions. My major boards are "stationary," "ceremony," "reception," "wedding dress," "bridal party," and "wedding hair." These are the big categories I needed help with, but the board options are endless!
Captions can be personalized
Pinterest allows you to edit the caption description of each pinned photo. I found it extremely helpful to write up my own personal descriptions for each pin so I could recall what I specifically liked about that photo. This was helpful recollection tool for me because some photos I pinned for certain elements versus others. Doing this may be a bit time consuming when you are just starting your boards and pinning lots and lots of photos, but after you start to narrow things down, the captions can really be helpful!
Boards can be shared
If you have a companion in the planning process (for me, it is my mom!) sharing the boards with each other has been extremely beneficial. Once you share a board with someone, they can view all the pins on the board as well as pin photos to it. My mom and I were able to work remotely and still make progress by sharing ideas with each other using the shared boards. Sharing boards with your wedding planners, florist, and other vendors is also very helpful as well. It's an easy way for them to see the vision you are trying to create. This is where the captions in your photos, as I mentioned above, can be an extra detail that is even more helpful when sharing with vendors. Captions help them understand what it is you specifically like about the photo.
Boards can be secret
A unique feature of Pinterest is that your boards can be secret! What this means is that they won't show up on your regular Pinterest page for the public to view. Some brides may not utilize this feature, but I have found it to be a nice way to keep my visions private. I like the idea of retaining an element of surprise for my guests! Secret boards can still be shared with fellow pinners, you just have to invite them to view.
Overall, I have found Pinterest to be an effective tool to help with the wedding planning process. I do believe it is also helpful to keep in mind that the photos serve as inspiration and will not necessarily replicate exactly what your wedding design and decor will look like. I've found it important to keep a realistic perspective when using Pinterest to help reduce the expectation of perfection. It's so easy to get caught up in all the design and styling elements of your day, but what makes the day perfect is the fact that you are marrying the love of your life!
