To those of you who have yet to experience the wonder that is "up north," you are missing out of a little slice of heaven. You may not even know it, Michigan may not be high on every world traveler’s radar – but I like it like that. It’s a secret place. It holds a special meaning to locals and visitors alike. It has an unmatched beauty, a refined quaintness and a simple yet sophisticated way of life.
Among the list of things drawing couples to Northern Michigan are the pristine beaches, panoramic views and wineries. Lots and lots of wineries. Most couples getting married here are looking to showcase one of those things.
These are 3 of the reasons I would (and did!) get married in Northern Michigan.
1. The Scenery
The natural resources in Northern Michigan are abundant. The landscape of Up North is unparalleled. Just think of the photo opportunities – we’re on the sunset coast of Lake Michigan, there are lakes, rivers, natural woodland areas, fields, orchards, wineries and rolling hills aplenty. Your guests will enjoy traveling not only to celebrate with you but also climb The Sleeping Bear Dunes, take a drive through the Tunnel of Trees, visit historic Fishtown or do a little wine tasting.
2. The Food
And wine, let’s put wine into this category as well since the area is home to over 40+ wineries. This is an agriculturally driven region with a plethora of farms and orchards so supporting the farm to table movement is a natural trend that seems to hit home. The northwest corner of Michigan is very craft oriented and is gaining momentum in the beer scene as well. Traverse City is more than just cherries, it has a growing and broad food scene offering an array of options to suit any distinguished pallet. From bold barbeque, to mouthwatering Mexican, high end sushi bars, Italian and beyond, the flavor profiles are endless and are sure to keep your mouths watering for more.
3. The Nostalgia
It seems that everyone I come across has a story to tell. Whether you spent your summers in Charlevoix, have been canoeing on the Crystal River or camped out on Manitou Island – Northern Michigan just has a way of feeling like home. There’s a simplicity to life with a wealth of family owned businesses and lots of small town, local gems. The people are welcoming, the memories are lasting and it’s a place that you’ll want to visit over and over again, showing it off to family and friends and celebrating every anniversary possible.
