Recently myself and Cammie with Epicure Catering took a trip to Empire, Michigan for a "meeting of the minds". Empire is a small village of approximately 400 people located in western Leelanau County along the shores of Lake Michigan. Home to the Headquarters for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire also plays host to the Asparagus Festival each year. It also just so happens to be the home of Chocolatier Mimi Wheeler and her gourmet chocolate shop, Grocer's Daughter Chocolate.
The story of Grocer's Daughter Chocolate [GDC] began in 2004 with the launch of the company and in just seven short years, Wheeler and GDC have made quite a name for themselves. Coming in just short of first as number two in Complex.com's list of "The 50 Best Chocolatier's In America" this past Valentine's Day, has done nothing but add to the booming amount of busness that GDC receives each year.
GDC partner's with a handful of local businesses in the production of their products. With a focus on all-natural and organic, Wheeler incorporates fruits, edible flowers and herbs into her chocolates. Finished products are then packaged in compostable bags and recyclable materials. GDC products run the gamut from truffles and caramels to bars and pre-made gift sets, they even accept custom orders from special occasions and weddings! Next time you visit Northern Michigan be sure to check out GDC, and if you can't make it all the way to Empire, don't worry, their products are sold in retail locations throughout Traverse City. Even if you're not a fan of chocolate, you should definitely give it a try, after all, the choco-tunities are endless!
